Recruitment Process
APPLICATION SCREENING
Human Resources will screen applications to verify candidates meet the minimum qualifications and response time. This step in the recruitment process is pass/fail.
Physical Ability Testing
Candidates must pass a physical ability test as part of the recruitment process. The OCFA utilizes two (3) different tests depending on the level requirements. Physical ability testing is pass/fail.
Level 1: Biddle Physical Ability Test
Level 2: Arduous Pack Test
Fire Crew Stations: Arduous Pack Test

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their education, work experience, community involvement, etc. in front of a panel of raters.
Background investigation
Candidates selected for further consideration, including alternates, will be referred to a background investigation. The background investigation includes, but is not limited to, Department of Justice/FBI criminal background check, employment reference check, DMV check, etc. The background investigation is pass/fail.
pre-emloyment medical examination
Candidates selected for further consideration must pass a medical examination before beginning the Reserve Academy. The medical exam is conducted through OCFA’s designated physician which includes drug and alcohol testing. The initial exam costs are paid by the OCFA.
